Pitt head football coach Pat Narduzzi is bringing along some company from Michigan State.
Narduzzi announced on Wednesday that former Michigan State defensive tackle Mark Scarpinato has elected to transfer to Pitt.
Being that Scarpinato has graduated already, he will be eligible to play this season for the Panthers. Scarpinato stands 6-foot-3, 286-pounds and should help the Pitt defensive front right away as a rotational player.
Scarpinato was a member of Michigan State’s 2011 recruiting class and started seeing the field as a redshirt sophomore. During the 2013 season Scarpinato started two games for a defense that was ranked No. 1 in the country and finished the year with 15 tackles.
He then decided to walk away from football and concentrate on medical school and to pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon.
At Pitt, he will pursue a master’s degree in Health Administration.
“When I signed my letter of intent, my goal was to graduate from Michigan State and win a Rose Bowl,” Scarpinato told MLive.com at the time. “I’ve achieved those things, and now it’s time for me to move on. I called my dad last Friday and told him, and he told me he hasn’t been this proud of me since the day I was born.”
Scarpinato will reunite with Narduzzi, who was the defensive coordinator at MSU during Scarpinato’s time there.
