The Pitt Panthers suffered a coaching loss on Saturday when it was announced that offensive coordinator Jim Chaney has left the program to accept the same position at the University of Georgia.
Chaney is the first hire of new Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. He also returns to the SEC where he spent six of the last seven seasons split between Tennessee and Arkansas.
He has had a lot of success as an offensive coordinator in the past and was a god hire this season by Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi.
While at Pitt, Chaney’s offense wasn’t as explosive as probably planned heading into the season.
But considering he lost reigning ACC Player of the Year James Conner after only eight carries it turned out to be a very good season. Starting quarterback Chad Voytik was also benched after two games in favor of Nate Peterman, who did a very solid job as the Pitt starter.
It is unclear at this point whether or not Chaney will call the plays in the Military Bowl on December 28 when the panthers take on No. 21 Navy, or if he will leave the program immediately.
In other news, it looks like running back Chris James will also transfer from the program. James is meeting with coaches today.
