The 2013 NBA Draft and NBA Summer League came and went without hearing the name Tray Woodall.
Despite working out for a couple NBA franchises, it doesn’t look as if there is a fit in the NBA at this time for the former Pitt point guard.
With that being said, that doesn’t mean Woodall won’t be playing professionally next season as he has signed a deal to play with a team in Istanbul.
That’s good to hear as Woodall got much better during his time in a Panthers uniform and emerged as a true leader for Jamie Dixon’s squad.
The trip to Istanbul doesn’t mean the door is closed for Woodall as hopefully he can work his way into the D-League and who knows what can happen from there. Several players have gone to play overseas and come back to get a shot in the NBA.
That’s a longshot still, but knowing Woodall, as long as that door is open just a little bit, he will do everything possible to walk through it eventually.
– As the Pitt football team prepares for camp, there is good news for safety Jason Hendricks who was named to the preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team, the only Pitt payer to do so. Hendricks led the Panthers in both tackles and interceptions last year and is poised for another big season.
-Speaking of the preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference team, how in the world is Aaron Donald’s name not on there? Donald’s resume to this point is simply too much to ignore as he was a clear snub. Even ESPN noted that Donald not being on the All-ACC team is a head-scratcher.
– Continuing with preseason ACC type stuff, the Panthers were picked to finish fifth in the ACC’s Coastal Division.
In their first year in the ACC, the Panthers were picked behind Miami, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Georgia Tech in their division. They were only voted ahead of Virginia and Duke by the 120 media members who voted at ACC media days.
Clemson was the runaway favorite to win the league, as the Tigers were picked as champion on 95 ballots. Florida State finished second with just 15.
The most common championship game prediction was Clemson over Miami, which appeared on 55 ballots.
– Ex-Pitt linebacker Deaysean Rippy looks to be transferring to Colorado. Rippy, a four-star recruit out of the 2012 recruiting class, redshirted as a freshman and was not on the Panthers’ two-deep at the conclusion of spring practices.
That’s it for this week’s notebook. Check back next week for more updates on the Pitt football and basketball programs.
