The Pitt basketball team is doing something that they have never done in program history this season when they head to Hawaii to take part in the Maui Classic.
Next season the Panthers will add another first to program history as well.
Pitt will open its 2015-16 season in the Armed Forces Classic against Gonzaga in Okinawa, Japan, ESPN announced Friday morning.
The game will be played on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015 at Camp Smedley D. Butler Marine Corps Base in Okinawa, Japan and will be televised nationally on ESPN as part of the network’s America’s Heroes: A Salute to Our Veterans.
It will be the fourth time that college basketball games take place on United States military bases across the world.
This year, Louisville will take on Minnesota at CGAS Borinquen in Puerto Rico, Friday at 7:30 p.m. (ESPN). Past games have included Connecticut vs. Michigan State in 2012 and Georgetown vs. Oregon last season.
When they tip things off next season, it will be the first meeting ever between the Panthers and Gonzaga.
As for this season, the Panthers open things up Friday night at 7:00 p.m. against Niagara at the Petersen Events Center.
