The University of Pittsburgh Men’s Basketball team has lost another player- their fifth in the past 20 months.
Head coach Jamie Dixon announced on Thursday that redshirt sophomore center Malcolm Gilbert has decided to transfer due to family-related reasons.
“Malcolm has asked for his release and has informed me that he wants to play with his brother,” Dixon said. “He’s a great kid, hard worker and good player. We thank Malcolm for his contribution to our program over the last year and a half and wish him much success in the future.”
His brother is currently at Fairfield so that is an option, or both players could end up somewhere else.
Gilbert played 93 minutes in 19 games last season and was planning on redshirting this season. Most of his minutes came after Khem Birch left the program. He averaged 0.5 points per game in 4.9 minutes per contest.
His decision to transfer puts him on a list of players to leave Pitt lately that includes: JJ Richardson, who left in April of 2011 for Houston; Birch transferred to UNLV in the middle of last season; Isaiah Epps left for Monroe C.C in the spring; and John Johnson transferred to Penn State last month.
