Pitt basketball announced in a release on Wednesday that sophomore guard Josh Newkirk has undergone arthroscopic knee surgery to repair the lateral meniscus in his left knee.
The surgery will hold Newkirk out for 4-6 months of workouts, according to the release.
“We expect Josh to make a full recovery and rejoin his teammates for the upcoming 2015-16 season,” Pitt coach Jamie Dixon said. “The surgery was a success, and we know that Josh will work hard during the rehabilitation period.”
Newkirk appeared in all 34 of the team’s games last year, averaging 5.9 points, 2.7 assists and 1.3 rebounds.
Newkirk scored 16 points, a season high, in two contests last year against Duquesne and Indiana.
Considered to be the top point guard in his graduating class in 2013, Newkirk was named to the All-ACC Academic team during his freshman season, which he appeared in all 36 games for the Panthers. Newkirk hit the 20-point plateau against North Carolina State, a career high. During the the game against the Wolfpack, Newkirk turned heads as he was a perfect 5-5 from behind the three-point line.
As of now, it’s unclear who will fill the void early on should Newkirk miss any time when the season begins, with Cameron Wright graduating and James Robinson manning the point.
