For the Pitt football program to turn things around in the near future, one thing that new Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi is going to have to accomplish is finding a legitimate big time quarterback.
For now though Narduzzi will likely settle for any quarterback.
As it stands now, the Panthers will extremely thin at the position next season behind starter Chad Voytik, after what has seemed to be a revolving door at the position the past couple of days.
Alex Hornibrook de-committed from Pitt on Monday, electing to follow Paul Chryst to Wisconsin instead.
In addition to Hornibrook flipping, according to Panther Lair’s Chris Peak, backup quarterback Trey Anderson has elected to transfer.
Those losses leave Voytik as the only scholarship quarterback on the Pitt roster who has any game experience.
Redshirt freshman Adam Bertke, who hasn’t taken a snap in a game, returns next season, as does Joe Repischak, who is a non-scholarship player.
That leaves the Panthers one Voytik injury away from possibly being in big trouble next season.
It does look as if JaQuaun Davidson will be making the switch back to quarterback for next season.
Davidson was an outstanding dual-threat quarterback in high school at Elizabeth Forward, where he passed for 1,038 yards and rushed for 1,109, while accounting for 29 touchdowns as a senior.
It is also being reported by a couple different outlets that with a scholarship now to give, new Pitt offensive coordinator Jim Chaney plans to visit with Pine Richland quarterback Ben DiNucci.
DiNucci, the Gatorade Pennsylvania player of the year, is coming off a big season in which he threw 4,269 passing yards and 46 passing touchdowns while leading Pine Richland to the PIAA state finals.
According to Rivals, the only FBS offers DiNucci has received are from Akron, Old Dominion, and New Mexico.
There’s about a month left until signing day so I would expect Narduzzi to look to add a quarterback, whether it be DiNucci or someone else.
