After a few days off, it’s time for the Final Four of Pittsburgh March Madness.
For two weeks, the fans have voted for 64 different athletes as they went head-to-head in a March Madness-type bracket. We here at Pittsburgh Sporting News ranked 64 of the most influential athletes, coaches and announces throughout the history of our prestigious city.
After many upsets and questionable picks, only four remain.
North Side Region: #1 Mario Lemieux – The savior of the Penguins franchise both on and off the ice was able to breeze through the competition to get to the Final Four. Will Super Mario have the same luck against Myron Cope to get to the finals?
South Side Region: #5 Myron Cope – Yoi and Double Yoi! Myron Cope knocked off high seed after high seed on his Cinderella-type run to the Final Four. Cope took down Dermontti Dawson, Kent Tekulve, “Mean Joe” Green and Chuck Noll on his run to the Final Four. Can the magic continue?
Mt. Washington Region: #1 Roberto Clemente – Similar to Mario, Roberto walked right through his competition to the Final Four. While he had to face Franco Harris and Sidney Crosby, both proved to be no problem for him.
Station Square Region: #1 Willie Stargell – As a No. 1 seed, Stargell had some trouble making it to the Final Four. He didn’t breeze through it like Roberto and Mario, but he did make it to the Final Four thanks to a one-vote victory over Terry Bradshaw.
As always, the vote is your to decide who will make it into the Pittsburgh March Madness Championship!
