Pittsburgh Penguins (1-0-0)
In their first game of the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins took one of their most bitter rivals, the Washington Capitals, all the way to a shootout that the Penguins won, 3-2. Now, tonight in Game 2, the Penguins are hoping to finish a game off in regulation.
Although the offense looked like it was clicking, there were still a lot of chances left on the ice, and the Anaheim Ducks, who Pittsburgh plays tonight, are a team that can take advantage of turnovers or bad decisions.
It will be Pittsburgh’s second game playing without its captain, Sidney Crosby (concussion), although head coach Mike Sullivan doesn’t seem overly concerned.
“Everything to this point has been encouraging, and we’ll take each day as it comes,” Sullivan said following Friday’s practice.
Anaheim Ducks (0-1-0)
The Anaheim Ducks are coming off of a 4-2 season-opening loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday. It’s likely goaltender Jonathan Bernier will be making his Anaheim debut against the Penguins in this evening’s game.
The choice in net was between either Bernier or Pittsburgh native John Gibson, but the team seems happy to have two confident goalies on its roster.
“[Bernier had] been great during camp,” said forward Jared Boll. “Every game he’s played, he’s been really good. He’s easy to play in front of. Both goalies we have are really good goalies and that helps out a lot.”
