The Pirates announced on Tuesday that they have acquired infielder Steve Lombardozzi from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations.
It’s the second move with the Orioles in as many weeks, as outfielder Travis Snider was shipped to Baltimore last week in exchange for pitcher Stephen Tarpley and a player to be named later.
Lombardozzi has received an invite to the Pirates Major League spring training camp.
Lombardozzi appeared in just 20 games for the Orioles last year, in which he hit .288. At Triple-A Norfolk, the 26-year-old Lombardozzi played in 78 games.
With Josh Harrison cemented in at third base, Lombardozzi will join Sean Rodriguez as the team’s utility man, if he makes the team.
Last year, he appeared in games at second base (38), left field (22), third base (16) and shortstop (five). According to the Pirates official release, all of the games he appeared in for the Orioles last year were at second base, with 17 of the 20 appearances as starts.
Before heading across the Beltway, Lombardozzi played three seasons with the Washington Nationals, whom he was drafted by in the 19th round in the 2008 draft.
For his career, he has a .266/.297/.341 slash line, with five home runs and 52 RBI in 277 career games.
