The Power have been somewhat quiet when it comes to AFL free agency, but they have added a few solid pieces to the core of the 2013 roster.
Five year AFL veteran Neil Purvis will return for his third season with the Power. The 6’2” Defensive lineman from Virginia State should provide a solid pass rush up front. He has registered 4 sacks in his first two seasons with the Power but has also fought through various injuries. If he can stay healthy those numbers should improve.
The bigger splash in my opinion was the announcement that defensive back Sergio Gilliam will join the team. Gilliam, a three year AFL veteran, had six interceptions for the Kansas City Command last year, and also added nine interceptions in 2011. He is a ballhawk, much like Chris LeFlore, and should help a Power secondary that was stingy on yardage last year but did not force a lot of turnovers.
The Power have also signed quarterback Steven Sheffield. Sheffield has spent his two AFL seasons backing up strong quarterbacks. He was the backup to Kyle Rowley in 2011 and backed up AFL legend Aaron Garcia last year in San Antonio. Look for the Power to bring in a few more options for quarterback and let the best man win the job.
The Power have also added wide receivers James Robinson and Perry Baker, as well as linebacker Marcus Hyde.
