The Pittsburgh Riverhounds fell to the Rochester Rhinos by a final of 3-0 Saturday night, wrapping up the Rhinos’ three-game sweep of the the Riverhounds.
In their first meeting, which was the season opener for both teams, the Rhinos handed the Riverhounds a 1-0 loss. Their most recent meeting came on June 25 when the Rhinos beat the Riverhounds 2-1.
In Saturday’s game, the Riverhounds (4-15-4) had plenty of chances. They had six shot with three on goal, but none were able to make it past Rhinos goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, who finished with three saves.
As for the Riverhounds’ goalkeeper, Zack Steffen got his second start, with Hunter Gilstrap suiting up behind him; Mauricio Vargas is still sidelined with a back injury. Steffen finished his night with six saves.
The Rhinos (10-5-9) got on the board early with an 8’ minute goal from Sofiane Tergou, which was assisted by Ryan Lee James. Tergou scored the second goal, this time unassisted, in the 40’ minute. The last Rhinos goal came from Sean Reilly in the 57’ minute.
The match had no yellow or red cards given out to either team’s players, which was a positive for the Riverhounds.
The Riverhounds will try to get back on track to end their season on a positive note with a match at home against the Wilmington Hammerheads on Wednesday, August 24 at 7 p.m. The last time the two teams met, back on July 30, saw the Riverhounds take the win with a final of 4-1.
