Pittsburgh Riverhounds head coach Dave Brandt is continuing to bring in more recruits for his team. Almost a week after signing former Riverhounds captain Danny Earls, Brandt and the Riverhounds announced the signing of forward Jack Thompson on Friday afternoon.
Thompson’s contract is for one year, but it has a 2017 option on it. Thompson previously played for the Charlotte Independence in the USL, where he made just one appearance and scored one goal.
“Jack is a strong and talented left-sided player, who also knows my system and style of play,” Brandt said. “I’m very excited to be able to coach him. He’s a very good signing for us right now.”
Thompson and Brandt are familiar with each other by association. Thompson played collegiately at Messiah College from 2011-2014; Brandt was the head coach at Messiah College from 1997-2008.
Thompson could be the boost the Riverhounds need. During his time at Messiah, he was a prominent goal scorer. In his 89 career matches, Thompson scored 35 goals and racked up 50 assists. His career high-scoring year came his junior year (2013) when he scored 17 goals. In his freshman year, Thompson was named the MAC Commonwealth rookie of the year.
To make room for Thompson, the Riverhounds released forward Ryan Dodson. According to the Riverhounds, Thompson should be available for Saturday night’s away match against the Richmond Kickers.
