The Pittsburgh Steelers selected RB Dri Archer of Kent State with their third round compensatory pick (97th overall).
Archer is a versatile running back who ran a 4.26-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, and is considered the best pure return man in the draft. The pick is similar to a selection that offensive coordinator Todd Haley made while head coach of Kansas City when he chose Dexter McCluster of Mississippi. Archer is a 5-foot, 8-inch 173-pound production machine that was limited by injuries during his senior season for Kent State.
In 2012, Archer set the MAC record with 23 total touchdowns, including 16 rushing TDs and four receiving TDs. He rushed for 1,429 yards that season. As a kickoff returner, Archer returned 51 kicks for 1,436 career yards and four touchdowns.
The multi-purpose threat will instantly bring big-play ability to a Steelers return game that has lacked ability for several years.
Archer is a product of Laurel, Florida – the third Florida product drafted by Pittsburgh thus far in the 2014 NFL Draft.
