Every now and then it’s hard just to pick a single player for our player of the week. This week is another one of those cases.
The North Catholic football team came from behind and won in overtime to put a stamp on a perfect 16-0 season with a PIAA Class A state championship Friday.
North Catholic, led by P.J. Fulmore, was able to come back and beat Old Forge, 15-14, in a thrilling finish.
Fulmore led his team into the overtime period and knew they needed a touchdown and a two-point conversion to win.
He got both.
The junior pounded the ball in from 10 yards out and then ran in the two-point conversion for the win. He would go on to finish with 109 yards rushing for the Trojans.
After Old Forge took a 7-0 lead in the first half, Catholic drove 86 yards down the field to knot things up in the fourth quarter on a Jerome Turner 16-yard scamper. The Trojans converted four times on fourth time, speaking to their resiliency.
After Old Forge scored first in OT, Fulmore and North Catholic wouldn’t let their season end with a loss.
And it didn’t.
For their strong season, capped off with a thrilling victory and state championship, the North Catholic football team is this week’s Pittsburgh Sporting News players of the week.
