Approximately 91,000 fans let their voices be heard, and the final result was that PNC Park was voted the best ballpark in Major League Baseball.
The voting was conducted online and took multiple rounds to determine the winner.
“There are so many outstanding MLB ballparks out there, and our readers certainly know quality when they see it,” said Kevin Reichard, Ballpark Digest publisher in a press release. “With a lovely Allegheny River location and the ultimate site in downtown Pittsburgh, PNC Park combines a timeless design with everything fans expect in a modern ballpark.”
The selection came as part of over a month-long celebration of ballparks in which fans of Ballpark Digest were asked to vote for their favorite Minor League, independent and summer-collegiate ballpark. Additionally fans were asked to select their favorite former MLB ballpark and Ebbets Field won out in that competition.
“We are proud of this distinction for PNC Park, especially the recognition is provided by such an informed group of voters,” Frank Coonelly, Pirates President, said in the press release. “This honor is a testament to the vision of all of those who played a part in the design and construction of PNC Park, and to the men and women of the Pirates staff who work tirelessly to make certain the guest experience in PNC Park matches the brilliance of the ballpark itself. It is important for the Pirates, as well as for the city of Pittsburgh, that PNC Park continues to be recognized as one of Major League Baseball’s iconic ballparks for generations to come.”
PNC Park first opened April 9, 2001 and seats 38,362. The voting mirrors what many fans, authors and publications have confirmed about the $262-million ballpark.
Among the factors cited were the surrounding downtown area and the entry via the Roberto Clemente Bridge.
This past weekend, 151,952 fans attended a four-game series against the Washington Nationals, a PNC Park record for a four-date series.
