Both Slippery Rock and Cal U opened their weekend at the Clarion Hotel Classic hosted by Shepherd University on Saturday and Sunday. Seton Hill also opened their season Saturday.
Slippery Rock started their season off with an overtime loss to Charleston (W.Va.), 73-68 on Saturday. Senior center Maurice Lewis-Briggs led the way with 18 points for The Rock. He also had six rebounds and blocked two shots on the day. Sa’Quan Davis chipped in 12 points and Tabari Perry added 11 points and eight boards.
The Rock’s shooters fell cold in overtime, missing all of their shots from the floor and only scoring from the free throw line.
On Sunday, Slippery Rock picked up their first win of the season over host Shepherd, 76-68.
Lewis-Briggs again led the way as he scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. He was named to the all-tournament team following the weekend’s games. Perry added 12 points, seven boards, four assists and two blocked shots.
Shepherd, down 25 points with just over 18:00 to play, rallied to pull within four with just 0:42 left on the clock. Slippery Rock would hang on, though, for their first win of the season. They go into the week with a 1-1 record.
Cal U started their season off in the same tournament, which was a slate of games to help prepare regional rankings. The Vulcans weren’t able to pick up any victories, though.
In the first game Saturday, Cal fell to host Shepherd, 83-77. Despite having four players in double figures and boasting the game’s leading scorer in Arman Marks, the Vulcans couldn’t overcome Shepherd’s 20-10 run to start the second half. Marks finished with 21 points in his Cal U debut. Alonzo Murphy, also a newcomer, scored 19 points for the Vulcans.
In the second game, Cal dropped a 65-55 decision to Charleston (W.Va.).
Sophomore guard Jake Jacubec scored a career-high 16 points but the Vulcans again couldn’t overcome a 17-6 run in the second half. Murphy added 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Vulcans fall to 0-2 to start their season.
Seton Hill played their season opener Saturday and picked up a resounding 90-54 victory over Pitt Greensburg.
Noah Davis led the way with 15 points as the Griffins had six players in double figures for the game. Malachi Leonard posted a double-double, scoring 14 points and snagging 12 rebounds.
The Griffins took a 31-point lead early in the second half and then cleared their bench to give everyone some playing time in the win.
The Griffins start their season 1-0.
