Cal U 45, Kutztown 10
Cal U provided a strong defense, only allowing nine yards on the ground, combined with 24 first-half points en route to a 45-10 victory over Kutztown.
Quarterback Cody Shroeder continues to shine, as he threw for a career-high four touchdowns in the victory. His favorite target, Mike Williams, hauled in eight passes for 132 yards and a score, his sixth 100-yard game of his career. Schroeder went 20 of 28 for 267 yards and the four scores. He hit 10 different receivers. Jeff Knox Jr. led the ground attack with 55 yards on the day.
Defensively, Brian Justice had 11 stops for the Vulcans.
Cal U improves to 2-0 and will play next week at home against Edinboro at 3 p.m.
Clarion 30, Lock Haven 13
Clarion, led by a solid rushing attack, took down Lock Haven, 30-13 on Saturday.
Bobby Thomas carried the ball 17 times for 147 yards and a score while Travis Day carried the ball 10 times for 77 yards and a score of his own for the Golden Eagles.
The passing attack came from Ben Fiscus, who was injured in the second quarter, and Darelle Carson, who filled in for Fiscus. Fiscus completed just five of 12 passes for 46 yards and a touchdown while Carson completed four of eight for 30 yards.
The defensive effort was led by Matt Long who had 11 tackles. Malik King also gave Clarion’s defense a big lift, posting five stops, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and an interception in the victory.
Clarion improves to 2-0 and will play at home next week against Mercyhurst at 6 p.m.
#15 Bloomsburg 47, Edinboro 35
514 offensive yards wouldn’t be enough for Edinboro as they fell 47-35 to Bloomsburg Saturday.
Cody Harris provided most of the offense for the Fighting Scots, as he completed 25 of 32 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 95 yards on the ground along with a touchdown.
Marcus Johnson did the bulk of the play-making in the receiving corps, catching nine balls for 185 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Scots were led by Delano Faber who had 10 stops.
Edinboro moves to 1-1 and will take on Cal U on the road next week.
Mercyhurst 49, Millersville 7
Three quick touchdowns by the Lakers were enough to put away Millersville early en route to a 49-7 victory Saturday.
Brandon Brown-Dukes bounced back from a Week 1 loss, and rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
The story of the game was Mercyhurst’s defense, though. The Lakers defense forced four turnovers, three of which were interceptions and one interception which was returned for a touchdown. Colin Kimball picked off Millersville twice and scored once. The Lakers also had 6.5 sacks on the day, setting Millersville back 41 yards total.
Mercyhurst moves to 1-1 on the season and will take on Clarion next week at 6 p.m.
#23 West Chester 56, Gannon 41
Liam Nadler continued to impress for the Knights, throwing for 371 yards and a school-record five touchdown passes in the losing effort. The leading receiver for Nadler was Quad Law, who caught 10 passes for 132 yards and two scores.
Running back Jansen Jones netted 98 yards on the ground for the Knights.
Justin Caliste was the man of the hour on special teams. He averaged 42.4 yards per kick return and broke the school record with 212 total return yards. He also had four catches for 37 yards.
The defense was led by Mike Zanders and Luke Rankie who each had 11 stops. Zanders had seven solo tackles.
Gannon moves to 1-1 and will play Slippery Rock next week at Noon.
East Stroudsburg 70, Seton Hill 7
After falling behind 30-0 after the first quarter of play, Seton Hill would not be able to overcome East Stroudsburg as they fell, 70-7.
Quarterback Nick Halfhill seemed to be the only means of offense for the Griffins. He completed 11 of 28 passes for 148 yards and the team’s only touchdown. He also led the team in rushing with 45 yards on the ground.
Norman Darden was the leading receiver on the day, catching four passes for 94 yards and the touchdown.
Tim Johnson led the way defensively with 14 tackles for Seton Hill.
Seton Hill falls to 0-2 and will take on IUP next weekend at 6 p.m.
