#7 IUP 62, Millersville 3
INDIANA, PA – On the day IUP officially renamed the field in honor of former head coach Frank Cignetti, the Crimson Hawks put on an offensive show, defeating Millersville 62-3 during the Homecoming game, Saturday afternoon.
Now Frank Cignetti Field at George P. Miller Stadium, Cignetti was recognized during a halftime ceremony for being inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame. IUP also officially renamed the field in Cignetti’s honor.
Eight different Crimson Hawks would put points on the board, led by a two-touchdown performance from Izzy Green (Trotwood, OH/Trotwood-Madison) and another 100-plus total yardage day by De’Antwan Williams (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge). Quarterback Mike Box (Lawrenceville, GA/Collins Hill) added three passing touchdowns, hitting three different receivers.
#17 West Chester 38, Cal U 31
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – In a game which featured back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns, the Vulcans suffered a 38-31 loss at No. 17 West Chester on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania football team falls to 3-2 overall with back-to-back losses against nationally-ranked opponents. The Vulcans have played top-25 opponents on the road in consecutive weeks for the first time since the 2009 NCAA Playoffs. Meanwhile, West Chester remains one of three undefeated teams in the PSAC at 5-0 this season.
Sophomore quarterback James Harris (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah) passed for 273 yards and two touchdowns while making his first career start. He completed 16-of-31 attempts to six different receivers with no interceptions. Harris entered the game with only 16 career pass attempts, all this season.
Sophomore wide receiver Kowan Scott (Easton, Pa./Wilson) set a career high and led all players with 118 yards on four catches against the Golden Rams. Seniors Mike Williams (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) and Trey Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) both scored a touchdown and finished with three receptions.
East Stroudsburg 48, Clarion 28
EAST STROUDSBURG, PA Clarion freshman qb Darrell Carson (Pgh. Perry) rushed for 3 touchdowns, but East Stroudsburg posted 692 yards of total offense and 48 points to defeat the Golden Eagles 48-28 on Saturday night in an NCAA Division II football game.
The PSAC inter-divisional game, held at Eiler-Martin Stadium, saw Clarion drop to 3-2 overall while the Warriors raised their record to 4-1.
The Golden Eagles drove 81 yards in 4 plays to score their final touchdown. Carson rushed for 10 yards, then hit Eric Frye (Fr. Pgh. Perry) on a57-yard pass play to the ESU 14. Martin rushed for a yard, and after a pass interference call against ESU, Chris Liberto (So. Springdale) bulled over from 2 yards out for the final Clarion td. Esposito’s kick at 2:57 made the final score ESU 48 – Clarion 28.
Clarion posted 377 yards of total offense including 189 rushing yards and 188 passing yards.
Carson completed 10 of 23 passes for 187 yards, plus rushed 15 times for 84 yards and 3 td’s. Thomas had 10 rushed for 54 yards and Martin 5 carries for 21 yards. Mark Nicholas had 3 catches for 54 yards and Matt Lehman 3 grabs for 47 yards.
Clarion’s defense was led by Cory McNamara (So. Ontario, N.Y.) who had 12 tackles and Matt Long (Sr. Pgh. North Catholic) and Peter Rivera (Jr. Allentown) with 8 each. Julian Hosware had 3 stops and a blocked punt.
ESU had 692 yards of total offense including 463 passing and 229 rushing. ESU QB Matt Soltes completed 29 of 34 aerials for 444 yards and 4 td’s, plus rushed 10 times for 37 yards. Jon SChnaars caught 9 passes for 124 yards and Robert Bleiler grabbed 8 passes for 130 yards and 1 td. Running back Robert Healy had 14 carries for 132 yards and 2 td’s.
Edinboro 31, Lock Haven 6
EDINBORO, Pa. – Edinboro ran for a season-high 226 yards to celebrate Homecoming with a 31-6 victory over Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium. The PSAC crossover win gave the Fighting Scots a two-game winning streak and a 3-2 overall record. Lock Haven, enjoying one of its best starts in years, fell to 2-3.
Jeremy Donaldson paced the ground game with his third straight strong effort. The sophomore ran for a career-high 144 yards on 16 carries. It was capped by a 62-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter. He had finished with a career-high 89 yards in each of the last two games.
While Donaldson paced the offense, the defense featured strong efforts from Devin Ghafoor andBobby Kmetz. Edinboro limited the Bald Eagles to 253 total yards, including just 68 in the second half. Ghafoor, a junior cornerback, contributed in a variety of ways, blocking a field goal, intercepting a pass, and even recording a sack. He ended the day with six tackles and a pair of passes broken up. Kmetz, a senior defensive end, added eight tackles and had 1.5 tackles for losses.
#9 Bloomsburg 38, Gannon 14
ERIE, Pa. – NCAA Division II leading rusher Franklyn Quiteh produced 251 yards and two touchdowns as No. 9 Bloomsburg defeated Gannon 38-14 Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action at Gannon University Field.
A homecoming crowd of 1,748 witness a physical affair that included 24 accepted penalties for 257 yards between the two teams. Bloomsburg took advantage early, racing to a 21-0 halftime lead.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Derek Burkhard got the Huskies on the board first with a 42-yard screen pass from Tim Kelly midway through the second frame. Quiteh then went to work, scoring on runs of 21 yards and 12 yards during the final 3:51 of the half. The latter capped the first-half scoring with 39 ticks left on the clock.
Bloomsburg out-gained Gannon 237-124 during the first half, but the difference came on the ground. The Huskies chewed up 139 rushing yards compared to the Golden Knights’ 32. Quiteh had 87 of those yards.
Shippensburg 73, Seton Hill 27
The Griffin football team lost a shootout at Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon. Points were a plenty as the Red Raiders defeated the Griffins by the score of 73-27. The Griffins fall to 0-5 overall.
The Griffins took a 7-0 lead after a Shippensburg turnover when Nick Halfhill hit Erik Kerns with a 16 yard touchdown pass just over two minutes into the contest. Shippensburg then scored the next four touchdowns to extend their lead to 28-7 after the first quarter. The Red Raiders pushed their lead to 35-7 with an 11 yard touchdown pass in the early parts of the second quarter. Seton Hill answered right back with a two yard touchdown run from Trae Cook after a 90 yard kickoff return from Norman Darden. Another Zach Zulli TD run gave Shippensburg a 42-13 lead with 5:54 to play in the second quarter. The Griffins closed out the scoring in the first half with a 5 yard touchdown pass from Lenny Dowell to Erik Kerns with six seconds to play in the second quarter which trimmed lead to 42-20 at the half.
