The much maligned Steelers secondary came into Sunday afternoon’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars looking for a spark. Of all places, they got it from a reserve cornerback, who was simply battling for a roster spot this Summer in training camp.
Brice McCain’s 23-yard interception return for a touchdown extended the Steelers tenuous one-point fourth quarter lead to 17-9, and gave the Steelers their second defensive TD of the season. McCain made a terrific play on the interception, jumping the route and picking off rookie quarterback Blake Bortles. It was the second interception of Bortles on the day.
With Ike Taylor out for an extended period of time with a broken forearm, McCain’s continued contributions will be needed for a Steeler pass defense that has struggled mightily at times this season. McCain, a former starter for the Houston Texans, had a rough year last season and was rated as one of the worst at his position according to Pro Football Focus positional rankings.
Looking for new life in Pittsburgh, McCain took a big step towards being a key contributor in the Steeler secondary with his crucial pick-six yesterday afternoon in Jacksonville.
Congrats to Brice McCain, PSN Player of the Week.
