While the Pittsburgh Penguins team won’t be taking home any hardware this year, their general manager proved why he is the best in the business. Ray Shero was named the 2013 NHL General Manager of the Year Friday afternoon. Shero had quite a year that put the Penguins in the best position to win make a Stanley Cup run. Shero was able to sign Tomas Vokoun to a two-year deal as an insurance policy for Marc-Andre Fleury’s playoff failures. Shero was also able to deal Jordan Staal to the Carolina Huricanes for Brandon Sutter, Derrick Pouliot and Brian Dumoulin.
Then there was his moves in the regular season that garnered the most attention. At the deadline, Shero traded for Brenden Morrow, Jarome Iginal, Jussi Jokinen and Douglas Murray. Before you say anything about the trades now and the Penguins inability to win in the postseason, the trades were praised from around the league when they took place and Shero did his part.
Congratulations to Shero on his award.
