Duquesne let the game get away from them in the second half in a road loss to LaSalle. The Explorers had their way with Duquesne for the second time this season.
For the first time in a while, Duquesne wasn’t in a basketball game that came down to the final minutes – but they certainly would have been happy to be in the situation they were in a week ago against St. Bonaventure.
LaSalle forward Steve Zack, who averages a double-double per game, was the high scorer for LaSalle, with 16 points and just as many rebounds. Tyreek Duren added 13, while Jerrell Wright and Tyrone Garland scored 11 for the opposition.
Ovie Soko of Duquesne led all scorers with 23 points. Aside from him, Tra’Vaughn Wright was the only other player in double figures for the Dukes. Wright, who came off the bench, finished with 13. Micah Mason added nine points on three 3-pointers.
The Dukes, who had contained Steve Zack the whole first half, let the star forward score six in the opening three minutes of the second half, to stretch the Explorer’s two-point halftime lead to eight points. Sam Mills made the lead 13, the largest lead of the night to that point, on his first in a string of three 3-pointers. After stretching the lead to 15, the Dukes made it a little closer, but never came near tying the game again.
White and Soko scored most of their points in the second half. Duquesne only made one less field goal than LaSalle, but didn’t get to the free throw line nearly as much. The Dukes were 9 of 12 from the line.
Duquesne heads to D.C. to take on George Washington on Wednesday, February 5th.
