Duquesne (8-7) went on a 30-2 run in the final 4:49 of the basketball game Wednesday night in Philadelphia against St. Joseph’s, but it wasn’t nearly enough to give them the victory. If anyone would have told coach Ferry before the game that his team would go on that kind of a hot streak, but still lose the game 84-75, he would have been beside himself.
The loss puts an end to Duquesne’s three-game road win streak and is the Dukes’ second straight loss to an A-10 opponent, dropping their conference record to 1-2.
The first half provided some jaw-dropping statistics, the most important of which was the 52-20 lead the Hawks jumped out to. The home team also shot a whopping 71 percent in the first half. The Dukes, on the other hand, hardly made it over 22 percent.
The first lead for Saint Joe’s was 12-0, then 37-11. By halftime, they had a thirty point lead – quite an insurmountable deficit. This was mostly thanks to Galloway, who hit his first five 3-pointers on his way to making six in the first half. Galloway finished with a game-high 26 points.
For Duquesne, Derrick Colter and Jerry Jones had 14 points each, but most of the scoring came in the second half. Soko and Ridenour finished with 10.
Credit Duquesne, in the second half for not giving up, as they outscored Saint Joe’s 55-32. They also turned it over just once in the second half.
Duquesne has no time to sulk after their embarrassing defeat, as they travel to Richmond (13-4, 1-1) for another tough game on Saturday, January 18th.
After their disappointing 18-14 finish last season, it appears Saint Joe’s has something to prove. Keep an eye out for the Hawks as March draws closer.
