The Pittsburgh Riverhounds continued to make roster moves. The team announced on Jan. 6 that they have signed two ex-MLS players. Corey Hertzog and Zak Boggs, who are both forwards, were signed to the Riverhounds to bolster their attacking game.
Hertzog’s career started at Penn State. In his junior year, he led the NCAA Division I in goal scoring. He decided to forgo his senior season and became eligible for the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, where he was selected by the New York Red Bulls. With the Red Bulls, he only made five appearances and scored no goals. After his short-lived MLS career, he made his way to the Wilmington Hammerheads on a loan. There, he scored nine goals in 17 appearances.
He made his way back to the MLS in 2013 when he signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps. He had seven appearances with the Whitecaps, and scored a single goal. However, he was sent on a loan to FC Edmonton of the North American Soccer League. In Edmonton, he scored two goals in 13 appearances. After his time there, he signed with the USL club Orlando City where he made 22 appearances and scored four goals. Hertzog spent his 2015 season with the Tampa Bay Rowdies where he made 47 appearances and scored eight goals.
As for Boggs, his MLS career was longer than Hertzog’s. Boggs was selected by the New England Revolution in the second round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. In his three seasons with the Revolution, Boggs appeared in 29 games and scored three goals. However, his MLS career was over in 2013 when he went to the Premier Development League and signed with IMG Academy Bradenton. There, he only appeared in five games with a single goal.
Afterwards, he made his way to the Charlotte Eagles, another PDL team, and appeared in 27 games and scored three goals. In his 2015 season, he made his way to the Tampa Bay Rowdies, alongside Hertzog, and appeared in 10 games. However, he did not score a single goal in his time in Tampa Bay.
Both players are the only forwards currently listed on the roster for the Riverhounds. The team will continue to make moves in the coming week and further on in preparations for their 2016 season.
