The Robert Morris football team may have gotten off to an 0-2 start and freshman Rameses Owens may have only played in two career games.
But that doesn’t mean Owens hasn’t opened up some eyes.
The true freshman was named The Sports Network National Freshman of the Week and also claimed a pair of honors from the Northeast Conference as he was named NEC Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week by the league.
Owens is the first RMU player ever to be named Sports Network Freshman of the Week after compiling 199 rushing yards on 39 attempts, averaging over five yards per carry, adding a touchdown, breaking several school records in the process.
The 199 yards is a new RMU record for single-game rushing yardage by a freshman and is among the top 15 performances ever by a RMU running back. It is also the most rushing yards by any Colonial in the program’s past 62 games and the most a by a Colonial in a non-conference contest since 1995.
The Colonials have had a tough non-conference slate to begin the season and several players, including Owens are getting their first taste of NCAA football.
One thing is for sure though is that the Colonials have a weapon in the backfield and NEC teams are going to have to take notice in Owens.
Robert Morris is back in action Saturday night when they travel to take on defending Patriot League champion Lafayette.
