On Saturday evening Robert Morris mens’ basketball player Stephan Bennett was arrested and eventually charged. The altercation occurred late Saturday evening into early Sunday morning outside of Mario’s on the South Side.
Police say they were originally called because of an unruly crowd in and around the East Carson Street bar. In the midst of the police arriving and escorting the crowd out of the bar, Bennett’s girlfriend was taken into custody for unknown reasons.
After Bennett’s girlfriend was taken into custody, the junior forward allegedly rearranged himself in a fighting stance directed at an officer, lunged towards the officer and was pushed. Another officer that was responding to the original disturbance attempted to get Bennett to cooperate.
Bennett, however, did not and police eventually had to use a sweeping leg takedown to take him to the ground.
Bennett was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, failure to disperse, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He was eventually released on $3,000 bond and has since been suspended by Robert Morris.
Robert Morris spokesman, Jim Duzyk, said:
“Per team policy, Stephan Bennett has been suspended from the basketball team pending further investigation.”
Over his three years at Robert Morris, Bennett had 62 blocks and averaged 16.6 minutes per game. If the Colonials win on Tuesday, it is unclear whether or not Bennett would be allowed back on the team.
