For the second straight night, the Colorado Rockies handled the Pirates easily at Coors Field 8-1 on Saturday night.
The Rockies (43-60) got to Pirates starter Jeff Locke for six runs over 6 2/3 innings. They started things in the third when Charlie Blackmon reached and advanced to second on a Jordy Mercer throwing error. Josh Rutledge followed with a RBI single. Drew Stubbs added on in the fourth with a solo home run to left field.
The two Rockies runs would be enough as the Pirates (54-48) were only able to record four hits off of rookie Tyler Matzek and Co., but they would continue to add on against Locke. With two on and one out in the fifth, Nolan Arenado singled to make it 3-0. Corey Dickerson added a RBI groundout in the inning before Locke could stop the bleeding.
The Rockies finished Locke’s line in the seventh when Arenado and Dickerson hit solo home runs. Jeanmar Gomez relieved Locke allowing a run over 1 1/3 innings.
Ike Davis was the Pirates only offense with an opposite field home run in the ninth.
Final Score: Rockies 8, Pirates 1.
