While most of the publicity in New York is surrounding Geno Smith and the quarterback situation, there’s a battle brewing on the other side of the ball as well. Former Cal U safety Rontez Miles, who was expected to be drafted in the 6th or 7th round, is hoping to make the Jets roster after the Jets rookie mini camp this weekend as an undrafted free agent signee.
Miles has a skill set that has been particularly intriguing to the Jets coaching staff so far in mini camp. Head coach Rex Ryan has even said that he’s had to tell Miles to slow down. “It’s like ‘son, we’re not hitting each other right now’,” Ryan said. But that isn’t a negative. It’s quite the opposite. Ryan has also said that Miles is aggressive, and that is something that Miles prides himself on.
Miles has said that it’s taken some time for him to get used to things and to get comfortable, but has started to emerge from the pack as a standout on the defensive side of the ball.
If Miles keeps his aggressive play and high motor alive, he could very well be looking at a spot on this roster when it’s all said and done. Miles has been signed, but could still be cut when the team makes its 53-man roster selections.
On a side note, Cal U wide receiver Thomas Mayo has been signed by the Jets after a tryout during mini camp.
