It looks like we can finally close the book on the saga that has become Rushel Shell’s collegiate football career.
After close to six months of drama in which we have seen Shell walk away from his starting spot at Pitt to transfer to UCLA, only to walk away from the Bruins as well, Shell has apparently settled on a home in Morgantown.
The leading rusher in Pennsylvania high school history announced Friday that he would be transferring to West Virginia to continue his college football career.
It was reported that Shell was deciding between West Virginia and Kentucky, but was close to leaning towards Mark Stoops and the Wildcats. However that turned out to be the case as Shell looks to be heading to West Virginia.
That alone is interesting as he will have some competition as Houston running back Charles Sims also transferred to WVU this summer.
Shell rushed for 641 yards and four touchdowns on just 141 carries and recorded nine catches for 103 yards as a freshman for Pittsburgh in 2012. That included a 23 carry for 157 yards performance against then No. 13 Virginia Tech early on in the season.
After deciding not to transfer to UCLA, Shell attempted to try and re-join the Panthers last month, but Pitt head coach Paul Chryst didn’t think twice about not allowing Shell back on the team. That leads the final destination of his circus ride to land in Morgantown.
Shell will have to sit out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Then the former Pittsburgh running back will have three years of eligibility remaining for the Mountaineers when he returns to the field in 2014.
