* The following is an official recap from the Washington Wild Things*
Washington, PA- Making his fourth start of his career against the Southern Illinois Miners, Frontier League veteran Gary Lee, a Chesapeake, VA native and descendant of General Robert E. Lee, had a difficult time gunning down the Miners offense in a 5-0 defeat at Rent One Park on Thursday.
Although Lee threw seven innings and struck out four, his mound opponent Preston Vancil quieted the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, offense and kept them off the scoreboard in a quick 2:08 complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Southern Illinois first basemen Jason Ganek mustered up a sacrifice-fly to take an early 1-0 lead and plated their second run of the frame when Carlos Mendez slid just under the tag of former teammate and Washington catcher Mario Mercedes.
Southern Illinois center fielder Cory Harrilchak, who had three RBI in the contest, drilled a line drive two-run homer over the right field fence into the visiting bullpen to put the Miners ahead 4-0.
The Miners added one more insurance run in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of a Bill Butler sacrifice-fly.
Andy Smithmyer, a collegiate pitcher out of East Carolina University, made his professional debut for the Wild Things in the eighth inning and kept the Miners off the scoresheet in a perfect inning of relief.
