The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed one of their top defenders to a three-year contract. The Steelers announced on Tuesday that they signed cornerback William Gay to a three year extension.
Financial terms were not disclosed on the contract. Gay joins the list of recent signing, which happened yesterday, which consists of Darrius Heyward-Bey and Robert Golden. Before the Steelers made the actual announcement, Gay posted a message to Steelers fans on his Instagram.
Gay has been with the Steelers for his entire career. His agent, Jerrold Colton, said that Gay is thrilled to have re-signed with the Steelers. “Will is thrilled to continue his career in the place it started. He loves everything about being a Steeler — the organization, the coaching staff, the fans, the city and Steeler Nation,” he said.
Gay was one of the more successful cornerbacks last season. In a year where he was named a defensive captain, he broke an NFL record for the most consecutive interceptions returned for touchdowns, with his total being five. Gay also put his name in the Steelers’ record books with five pick-sixes, which are tied for the most in Steelers’ history.
His numbers for 2015 were equally as impressive. He started in all 16 regular season games, and both of the Steelers post season games. He recorded 58 tackles, with 46 being solo and 12 being assisted. He had one sack against Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson in Week 12 and had two interceptions against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14 and the Cleveland Browns in Week 17.
