The Pittsburgh Steelers added another draft pick for the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft on Monday when the league handed out its compensatory picks.
The Steelers were awarded a seventh round selection, No. 252 overall.
Compensatory picks are awarded at the end of rounds based on team’s free agency activity the season before.
The Steelers signed five free agents last year- LeGarrette Blount, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Mike Mitchell, Arthur Moats, Adam Podlesh and Cam Thomas- who weren’t previously waived by their previous team.
They lost seven free agents prior to last season, which include: Ryan Clark, Jerricho Cotchery, Jonathan Dwyer, Ziggy Hood, David Johnson, Emmanuel Sanders, and Al Woods.
The Steelers were awarded a pair of compensatory picks during last year’s draft. They used those to select Dri Archer (third round) and Daniel McCullers (sixth round).
Pittsburgh now has a total of eight draft picks in the 2015 NFL Draft. One in each of the first six rounds and two in the seventh. It is worth noting that the compensatory pick they received can’t be traded.
As it gets closer to draft time, expect the Steelers to use more than a couple of their eight selections to bolster a very thin secondary, especially when it comes to the cornerback position.
