Every year in training camp, the Pittsburgh Steelers find a surprise or two that not only make the roster, but end up offering a big impact.
One can look no further than Antonio Brown a few years ago, who not only came out of nowhere to earn a major role on the team, but in a short time in the NFL became the Steelers top pass catching option and one of the more dangerous players in the entire league.
Who could that guy be this year as the Steelers prepare to begin training camp in a couple of weeks?
It very well could be Brian Arnfelt.
Many right now may be asking one simple question.
Who is Brian Arnfelt?
Remember the name as Arnfelt could be a guy that not only forces his way onto the roster, but could end up getting regular playing time at defensive end opposite Cam Heyward.
As things look right now, veteran Cam Thomas or rookie Stephon Tuitt likely will be starting the season lining up opposite Heyward, but ultimately Arnfelt could have something to say about that.
Arnfelt had a pretty good preseason last year, registering eight tackles in four games and did a lot of good things on film. While it wasn’t enough for him to make the team out of camp, the Steelers thought enough of him to keep him on the practice squad last year.
You can bet he will get a long look this season.
Injuries happen and while I do like Tuitt a lot and think he could be the most impactful rookie of the Steelers 2014 draft class, rookies tend to struggle in the Steelers’ defense, which could open up the door for a guy like Arnfelt.
Arnfelt impressed enough during the season last year that he was made active for the Steelers final three games.
He had a nice college career at Northwestern and has done a lot to open some eyes in his short time with the Steelers. At the minimum this season he should be a guy who can add decent depth to the Steelers defensive line.
I would expect Arnfelt to make this team out of camp and if you are looking for a sleeper to follow in camp, he very well may be the guy to follow closely.
