PITTSBURGH — Playing in their first preseason overtime game since 1986, the Steelers lost their third game of the preseason by a score of 26-20.
The Steelers jumped to a 3-0 lead, as Shaun Suisham knocked down a 28-yard field goal on the team’s opening drive. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and wide receiver Antonio Brown connected on a 49-yard completion on the second play from scrimmage to help set up great field position.
The following drive, Kansas City was set up with a fourth and one from their own 21-yard line, and coach Andy Reid decided to roll the dice and go for it. Jamaal Charles was unable to get the one yard he needed as Troy Polamalu, Jarvis Jones, and Ziggy Hood helped shut it down.
The Steelers were set up with first and goal from the Chiefs three-yard line, but after a sack, faced a third and goal from the 13 yard line. Roethlisberger did what he does best, extending the play, and eventually finding a wide open Jonathan Dwyer who took it in to make it a 10-0 game late in the first quarter.
After a Suisham field goal attempt was blocked, the Chiefs were able to get on the board with a 19-yard field goal from Ryan Succop. The Chiefs tied the game up late in the first half on a five yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith to Junior Hemingway.
Late in the third quarter, the Steelers retook the lead on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Bruce Gradkowski to Marcus Wheaton. Wheaton, the rookie out of Oregon State, continued to impress tonight, catching three passes for 54 yards.
The following kickoff, Suisham’s kick was fielded nine yards deep in the Chiefs end zone, and rookie Knile Davis returned it 109 yards to tie the game up.
The Steelers took the lead early in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard field goal from Suisham. Succop made a 38-yard field goal with 1:32 left in the game to tie it up. The score stood 20-20 at the end of regulation.
Kansas City received the ball to open up overtime, and didn’t waste any time ending the game, as Chase Daniel hit Rico Richardson for a 15-yard touchdown.
Felix Jones, who was acquired in a trade earlier this week from Philadelphia, made his debut in a Steelers uniform, and collected 28 yards on eight carries. He also returned two kicks, and averaged 25 yards on his two returns. Dwyer finished the night with 25 yards on eight carries. Issac Redman did not play.
Roethlisberger threw for 166 yards, completing 13 passes in 19 attempts. Gradkowski completed eight passes in 17 attempts, collecting 115 yards.
First round pick Jarvis Jones left the game in the fourth quarter with a chest injury.
The Steelers will conclude their preseason schedule Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers.
