The Steelers fell on another last second field goal tonight, this one coming on the leg of Rob Bironas. On a game the Steelers were favored and picked to win by almost everybody, they once again played down to their competition and were unable to come away with a victory.
The Titans were able to strike first as they had their opening drive result in a Rob Bironas 22-yard field goal. The field goal wasn’t as easy as it seems, as Bironas banked it off the post, but the ball was still able to sneak in. The Steelers would respond with a 29-yard field goal from Shaun Suisham.
Ben Roethlisberger played a decent game throwing for 363 yards, with 82 of them coming on a touchdown pass to Mike Wallace. The touchdown pass came in the middle of the first quarter and was one of two catches for Wallace. The other catch went for twelve yards.
The Titans would cut the lead to 10-6, as Bironas would pick up his second field goal of the night, on a 38-yard strike. The Titans would get seven more on the board before half time, when Jaime Harper went in for a one yard touchdown for the Titans. The touchdown came two plays after Steelers punter Drew Butler had his punt blocked, which the Titans would recover at the one yard line. Tennessee would take a 16-10 lead into halftime, after Bironas hit his third of four field goals as time expired in the first half.
The Steelers would open up the second half with a field goal drive, and would eventually take the lead on a touchdown run. After a pass interference call in the end zone, Baron Batch was able to score a one yard touchdown, the first of his career, for the Steelers and give them a 23-16 lead.
The Titans would go on to tie the game up. After targeting Kenny Britt four times in the span of five plays, he would finally catch a touchdown over Ike Taylor to tie the game up.
The Steelers were given four minutes to work with and had more than enough time. They were able to get to the 37 yard line, where they would send out Suisham to attempt his fourth field goal of the game. The kick came up short by a yard or two, and the Titans, who were given two timeouts and a short field to work with, would march right into Bironas field goal range, where he would knock down a 43-yarder for the win.
Three straight games have resulted in last second field goals for the Steelers and despite Issac Redman catching for over one hundred yards, the team still could not pull off a win. The Steelers will have a long week to reevaluate themselves and will play the Bengals next Sunday night.
