Those expecting the Pittsburgh Steelers to get busy during the second wave of free agency may want to hold off on making the popcorn just yet.
Needless to say it has been a very quiet couple of weeks to start the offseason for the Steelers with running back DeAngelo Williams being the franchises only significant addition to this point.
With major holes at both linebacker and in the secondary, among other positions, don’t expect Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert to get busy filling those holes.
“We’re still looking at what the options are, and we’ll continue to do that,” team president Art Rooney II told the Trib’s Mark Kaboly. “I think we’re at this point not expecting that there’s going to be a lot more activity out there, but we’re certainly continuing to look. If there’s a player that makes sense for us to pursue, we’ll do that.”
Unlike years in the past, the team is in a good spot right now when it comes to the salary cap and has a chance to create even more room after June with the eventual release of Troy Polamalu along with a possible extension for defensive end Cameron Heyward.
Yet with all the cap space readily available, don’t expect the Steelers to start writing checks to just anyone that is still out there.
Rooney’s comments pretty much says two things.
He let you know what the Steelers plan to target in the draft and also says that the door is open for young players, including rookies, to be able to come in and start making an impact right away as the Steelers defense will continue to transition away from veteran players and look to emphasize youth in the upcoming seasons.
The one thing that is almost certain though is that we won’t see this team filling holes throughout free agency the rest of the way.
