For a while now there have been whispers about the Pittsburgh Steelers wanting to host a Super Bowl in the near future.
It looks as if seeds are being planted in order for that to potentially happen.
According to Chris Adamski of the Tribune-Review, Pittsburgh mayor Bill Peduto other local dignitaries met with Steelers executives Wednesday morning concerning the city and stared to lay the ground work to bring Super Bowl LVII to Heinz Field in 2023.
“We met this morning with local community leaders to provide an update on formally submitting our application to the NFL to bid for Super Bowl LVII in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement released by the team. “The application is an early step in the bidding process, and we will continue to meet with representatives of the Mayor’s Office, County Executive’s Office, VisitPittsburgh, Allegheny Conference as well as other community leaders to review the requirements with the hopes of submitting our bid to host Super Bowl LVII in 2023.”
The franchise did submit an application to host a future Super Bowl during the annual NFL owners meetings in San Francisco in May.
The next step would be to submit a formal application, which likely can’t be done until 2018.
Finalists to host Super Bowl LVII will likely be announced later that season and the winner of the bid would probably be announced sometime in 2019.
The first outdoor Super Bowl played in a cold weather venue was in 2014 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
Since then cold weather cities such as Pittsburgh has been positioning themselves to potentially host the big game as well.
