Jacoby Jones’ stay in Pittsburgh didn’t last long. Jones, who replaced former returner Dri Archer, signed with the Steelers this season back on Nov. 5. However, his time in Pittsburgh is now over after a series of poor returns.
Jones was originally signed to be the Steelers kick and punt returner. However, Jones never got the job done. His first game in a Steelers uniform was against the Indianapolis Colts the day after his signing, on Nov. 6. His first game was a nightmare, as he fumbled the ball twice. Tomlin, fed up with the lack of production on special teams, instantly demoted Jones to a backup role. Jones was then replaced by Markus Wheaton on kick returns and by Antonio Brown on punt returns.
Jones suited up for four games this season for the Steelers. In those four games, he only had six punt returns for 19 yards and had nine kick returns for 220 yards. Jones also had a fumble on another return this year, totaling his fumbles to three in just four games.
As for Ventrone, he’s no stranger to being on the Steelers squad. This season, he was a part of the original 53-man squad. However, when Martavis Bryant returned from his suspension, Ventrone was released to make room for the wide receiver. He was also signed by the New England Patriots this season, but was released shortly after his signing. Before being brought back up to the 53-man roster, the Steelers signed Ventrone to the practice squad on Dec. 29.
For the 2014 season, Ventrone spent his time on the Steelers roster after being activated to the active roster on Oct. 11. In his nine games he played last season, he totaled seven tackles. He saw regular time on special teams, but only experienced a few moments at his safety position.
The Steelers will travel to FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio to face the Cleveland Browns in a must-win game. If the Steelers win and the Buffalo Bills defeat the New York Jets, the Steelers will be in the playoffs. Jones will now have to watch on his couch.
