The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in a couple quarterbacks with strong college pedigrees this offseason, but none of them will stick with the team throughout camp.
According to sources, the Steelers have released former Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd. That came just a week after the team released former Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner, who was also getting reps at wide receiver.
Boyd was brought in this season to compete with Landry Jones for the team’s No. 3 quarterback spot, but Boyd struggled badly throughout the first couple weeks of camp and didn’t appear in either of the Steelers two preseason games.
No. 2 quarterback Bruce Gradowski was activated off the PUP list two days ago so there was no longer a need for Boyd in camp.
Boyd finished his college career as both Clemson’s and the ACC’s all-time career leader for passing yards (11,904) and touchdown passes (107).
He went undrafted in 2014 before signing with the New York Jets where he was also released rather quickly.
As bad as Jones has struggled in three seasons with the Steelers, the team seems committed to him as the No. 3 quarterback for now, which makes some sense considering they used a fourth-round draft pick on him.
While Jones clearly has the leg up to remain the Steelers No. 3 quarterback, the team still has options if they wanted to upgrade as they could keep their eyes on the waiver wire as teams begin to make moves.
To take Boyd’s place on the camp roster, the Steelers signed wide receiver Jarrod West.
West was an undrafted rookie out of Syracuse who spent some time recently in camp with the New York Jets. He had 49 catches for 700 yards last year at Syracuse.
