There is no doubt that the Pittsburgh Steelers need cornerback help this offseason.
What hasn’t been determined is the path they will take to get that help whether it be via the draft or free agency.
If they look to add depth via free agency, one possibility could be recently released Philadelphia Eagles corner Cary Williams.
According to several reports, including that from Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun, the Steelers are one of five teams with their sights set on Williams.
Wilson adds that the Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and New York Jets are also in the mix.
The Steelers pursuit of Williams would be an interesting one. Yes they are very thin at the position, but Williams doesn’t necessarily represent an upgrade over what the team currently has, but more of a reclamation project.
The 30-year old struggled big time in a two-year stay in Philadelphia, leading to his release.
Williams, a former seventh-round pick, was pretty effective with the Ravens from 2009-12, starting 27 of his final 32 games with Baltimore during his last two seasons there.
That led to a three-year, $17 million deal with the Eagles. Williams started all 32 games and intercepted five passes the past two seasons, but was very ineffective for the most part.
Williams was ranked 40th of 59 corners by Pro Football Focus against the run last season and didn’t fare too much better against the pass as he finished rankled as the 49th overall corner in the NFL last season.
The likely scenario is that the Steelers are just doing their due diligence on an available corner that could possibly help the current situation.
Ideally though I would be shocked if the team aggressively pursues Williams with the intent of signing him.
