Once again, the Steelers spurn the position many hoped they would pick and go for a linebacker in the first round for the third time in three seasons.
This time, the pick is University of Kentucky linebacker Alvin “Bud” Dupree, a speedy, pass rushing specialist who will be expected to help improve the Steelers pass rush this upcoming season. With 4.5 40-speed and a high motor, Dupree is a potential impact player from day one. Dupree did look a little sluggish and disinterested at times on tape, but one can hope that the Steelers will provide the right motivation to get the most out of him play in, play out.
For many Steeler fans, the decision to pass on cornerback is going to be criticized, but there is no question the six-foot four, 269-pound Dupree has the talent to make the Steelers defense better by getting to the quarterback with more regularity.
The real question now becomes can Dupree come in and immediately make an impact for the Steelers as a rookie. If Jarvis Jones can stay healthy and be the player the Steelers believed he would be when he was picked in the first round two seasons ago, the Steelers could have an outstanding pass rushing duo in a league where pressuring the quarterback means a lot.
