The Steelers announced earlier today that they have reached an agreement with safety Gerod Holliman. Holliman was signed to a four year deal, the financial details of the contract still have not been disclosed.
Holliman was the Steelers final pick in this year’s draft and was also the last drafted player to be signed. He played his college ball at Louisville and even though he started just one year he definitely made the most of it. In that one year he racked up 37 tackles, one sack, 17 passes defensed and recorded an amazing 14 interceptions in only 12 games. His 14 interceptions led the NCAA in 2014 and tied Al Worley’s record which he set back in 1968.
After his impressive season Holliman was rewarded with numerous accolades. The most prestigious was the Jim Thorpe Award which is given to the nation’s best defensive back. Holliman was also voted a First Team All-American and was selected to the First Team All-Acc squad.
Holliman is a major piece of the Steelers massive youth movement on defense during the offseason. He joins fellow draftees Senquez Golson and Doran Grant as the newest additions in the defensive backfield. All three men have their work cut out for them as they try to help a defense that slipped to 18th in overall yards allowed and 27th in passing yards allowed.
The Steelers have now signed all of their 2015 draft choices. The team’s offseason program at their South Side training facility continues with OTAs until June 11. Minicamp will held June 16-18 and players will report to training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA for the 50th consecutive year on July 25.
