The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed veteran long snapper Greg Warren to a one-year extension on Friday, the team announced. Warren, who has been with the Steelers for 11 years, has been a major veteran presence on special teams with the mentoring of rookie kicker Chris Boswell and punter Jordan Berry.
Warren starred in all 16 regular season games with the Steelers this past season and was there for the Steelers two playoff games against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Denver Broncos. Warren did a solid job this year ensuring that no punts or kicks were blocked and that the kickers were protected.
Warren will enter the 2016-2017 season with his job placement set in stone. However, Warren might have to adjust to a brand new punter, as there will be some competition to compete with Berry in training camp. Warren will either have rehabilitating kicker Shaun Suisham back or Boswell kicking field goals. No matter who it is, Warren’s job is fairly simple: do not snap the ball wrong and don’t let defenders near the kickers.
Warren will be 34 during the time the NFL season kicks off. Warren has appeared in 165 games for the Steelers, which is the fifth-most among active Steelers players on the current roster. Terms of Warren’s contract has yet to be disclosed to the media.
