The Pittsburgh Steelers made a significant addition to their depleted wide receiver depth chart today, signing 30-year old WR Lance Moore to a two-year deal. Financial terms have not been immediately disclosed.
Moore was released by the New Orleans Saints after spending eight seasons with the team. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo in 2006, and was due to make $3.8 million in 2014 before becoming a salary cap causality.
Moore caught 37 passes for 457 yards and two touchdowns in 2013, one season removed from a 65 catch, 1,041-yard campaign in 2012. He has been used sparingly on punt returns over the past few years, but does have some experience in the role.
The next major free agent to meet with the Steelers is veteran RB LeGarrette Blount, who will be in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Blount spent 2013 with the New England Patriots after beginning his career with three seasons in Tampa Bay. He rushed for 772 yards and seven touchdowns last season in rotational duty for the Patriots.
Blount is considered a very effective short-yardage and goal line back, and would seem to be a solid match for the Steelers needs behind starting RB Le’Veon Bell.
Fans will remember Blount as a controversial player who was suspended for two months during his senior season at Oregon after punching an opposing player in a post-game altercation after a loss to Boise State. He was not drafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, and after spending time with the Tennessee Titans during the preseason, he eventually ended up with the Buccaneers.
