The 2012 Steelers season was nothing but disappointing. The Steelers struggled in late game situations and limped to an 8-8 record. The Steelers are looking for a bounce-back season and if it’s going to happen, it has to start up front.
The offensive line will determine how the upcoming year goes. The line has a lot of talent. Two of the starters, Maurkice Pouncey and David DeCastro, were first round picks. Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert were second round selections. The fifth starter Ramon Foster has been a staple in the line for four years.
When this group is healthy, they should perform at a high level. The problem last season was injuries. Between the five of these linemen, they missed a combined 30 games last season, which led to a rough season for the line. Run blocking was awful, as the Steelers only amounted 1,537 rushing yards; good for 26th in the league. Whether it is Jonathon Dwyer, Isaac Redman or a healthy Le’Veon Bell in the backfield, their success will depend on a healthy offensive line.
The line also allowed 37 sacks, part of which is a product of Ben Roethlisberger’s playing style. He was sacked 30 times in 13 games. The line needs to keep Roethlisberger upright and healthy this season.
Health will be the biggest concern for the offensive line. Two of the backups are rookies and John Malecki, another backup, has only played in one game in his career. If the offensive line can stay healthy and perform at a high level, it will give the offense a two dimensional game, and will take the pressure of Roethlisberger and the passing game. If this happens, expect the Steelers to bounce back in a big way.
