Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert has been busy freeing up cap space for the upcoming offseason.
On Wednesday I looked at the fact that Colbert freed up $3.7 million by restructuring the contract of offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert. Later on in the day he did the same to both safety Mike Mitchell and center Maurkice Pouncey.
The three restructured deals will save the team a total of $9.5 million in or the upcoming season.
Mitchell, who signed with the Steelers prior to last season as a free agent, was due a $2 million roster bonus. That and a portion of his upcoming salary will be converted to a signing bonus, which will ultimately spread out his cap hit over the course of the next five seasons.
Pouncey, who signed an extension prior to last season, was due a $3.75 million roster bonus and was set to count $8.1 million against the cap next season.
The money saved likely could go towards a new deal for free agent linebacker Jason Worilds, a guy that Colbert has been on record of saying he would like to keep around.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is also expected to sign a big contract extension, which should free up a good bit of money heading into the offseason.
