We don’t know who won all of the training camp battles yet for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but one thing we know for sure is who won the competition to be the team’s punter in 2015.
Friday, the Steelers traded punter Brad Wing to the New York Giants, which hands the job to Australian Jordan Berry.
The Steelers will get back a late-round pick in the deal, which is good in its own right. This marks the third trade already that Kevin Colbert has made since training camp began, shipping out late round picks to both the Philadelphia Eagles for cornerback Brandon Boykin and to the Jacksonville Jaguars for kicker Josh Scobee.
The Giants made the move for Wing, shortly after having released veteran punter Steve Weatherford.
The 24-year old Wing punted 61 times for the Steelers in his rookie season last year. He averaged 43.7 yards per punt with a net average of 38.6 yards. It wasn’t a great rookie campaign as Pro Football Focus graded him 28th out of the league’s 32 regular punters
Berry, who played his college football at Eastern Kentucky was thought to be just another camp body who was signed in the offseason, but he clearly outkicked Wing during camp and the preseason games and did enough to earn himself a job.
