The big news on Thursday around the NFL was the announcement of a five-year contract extension for Indianapolis Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton.
The extension wasn’t just good news for Hilton and his agent Drew Rosenhaus, it was also good news for Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown.
Hilton’s extension, along with any contract signed by a wide receiver, like recent extensions for Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas, only help set the market for Brown. As the NFL’s best wide receiver, Brown is due for a big bump in pay and the more receivers who sign, the better it is for Brown.
Rosenhaus is also the agent for Brown and many believe he needed to get a deal done for Hilton before getting a bigger deal for Brown.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rosenhaus and the Steelers are scheduled to meet with regard to Brown’s contract Friday in Jacksonville, Florida. The Steelers are playing in Jacksonville Friday night, so it is possible something could get done, or at least some progress made by the end of the weekend.
Brown currently has three years remaining on his current deal and is set to have a base salary of $6 million this season. That makes him the 13th highest paid wide receiver in the NFL.
In addition to a new deal for Brown, one would have to think that the Steelers need to get a new deal done with offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum by the end of camp as well as Beachum is entering the final year of his deal.
