The season is officially over for the Pittsburgh Panthers men’s basketball team. Pitt fell to the No. 21 University of Virginia Cavaliers 75-63 on Wednesday night in the ACC Tournament to end the season on a low note. The night before, the 14-seeded Panthers started the tournament with a narrow 61-59 win over the tournament's No. 11 seed, Georgia Tech. “We’re very disappointed,” head coach Kevin Stallings said after Wednesday night's game. “Congratulations to Virginia. They just played ... Read More
What happens to Pitt with Jamel Artis, Michael Young gone?
Seniors Michael Young and Jamel Artis are easily the best players on the University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team. It’s hard to dispute. If there’s been one consistency for the Panthers in their dismal 2016-17 basketball season, it’s that Young and Artis always tend to lead the team in some sort of category. It could be points, rebounds, assists — or even steals. Young, a forward, has scored a team-leading 617 points thus far in the season (an average of almost 20 points per game), ... Read More
Panthers narrowly defeated by No. 12 UNC, 80-78
The Pitt Panthers are keeping their basketball games close, but it’s not enough for the win column. The Pitt men’s basketball team (12-10) was narrowly defeated by the No. 12 University of North Carolina Tar Heels (20-4) on Tuesday night, 80-78, as Panthers senior forward Jamel Artis missed the go-ahead 3-pointer with time expiring. This loss is Pitt's seventh in a row. “I’m really disappointed for my guys,” head coach Kevin Stallings said after the game. “I thought that, under the ... Read More
Panthers drop sixth-straight in 67-60 loss to Clemson
The Pitt Panthers are still riding the losing-streak train. The Panthers dropped their sixth-straight game against Clemson on Saturday at the Petersen Events Center by a final score of 67-60. And this despite the fact that Pitt led Clemson 36-31 at the end of the first half. Granted, the loss wasn’t as bad as the Panthers' most recent loss (an embarrassing 106-51 defeat at the hands of the University of Louisville Cardinals), but a loss is still a loss for Pitt head coach Kevin ... NC State narrowly defeats Pitt men’s basketball, 79-74
From the first touch on tip-off to the final buzzer, it was a close game on Tuesday night between the Pitt Panthers and the North Carolina State Wolfpack. However, the Wolfpack managed to earn the win at their home arena, 79-74. At the end of the first half, the Wolfpack led by one point, 35-34. And NC State managed to stretch that lead all the way until the end. After a dismal game against the University of Miami four days ago, against the Wolfpack, Pitt senior forward Michael Young ... Bench fails to score as Panthers fall to Syracuse
The Pittsburgh Panthers didn’t have a win streak for very long. Saturday, the Panthers were defeated by the Syracuse Orange, 77-66. The loss came just one game after the Panthers defeated the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers on Wednesday. Pitt hoped to revive its former five-game winning streak, however, due to a lack of points scored by the bench — only the starters scored — the Panthers were defeated in New York. Head coach Kevin Stallings blamed the defeat on the defense. “There were ... Read More
Pitt defeats No. 11 Virginia in overtime, 88-76
“Well if you like college basketball, that was a great college basketball game,” said Pitt Panthers head coach Kevin Stallings after Wednesday's 88-76 overtime win over the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers. “We feel fortunate to have won it,” Stallings said. “I’m really proud of my team. I’m proud of the way that they played. I’m proud of the way that they competed.” It's the second game in a row where the Panthers took a ranked team to overtime (the team lost to the No. 24 Notre Dame Fighting ... Read More

The Panthers were led in scoring by Jamel Artis, who put up a season-high 31 points. Right behind him was Ryan Luther, who came off the bench to score 20, a career-high for the junior forward. Pitt also had another double-digit scorer in Michael Young, who tallied 12 points, and Cameron Johnson, who had 10 points. Head coach Kevin Stallings praised his players ... Read More
Panthers cruise past Nittany Lions in 81-73 win
The University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University have always had a rivalry. In academics, in athletics, on the football field (see: earlier this year) — and on the basketball court. The Pitt Panthers and Penn State Nittany Lions met on the court Saturday night, and it was the Panthers that earned the win by a 81-73 final score. Pitt was led in scoring by senior Michael Young, who scored 29 points. Every Panthers player put up at least a single point, with other double digit points ... Read More
Panthers bounce back with win over Buffalo
The Pittsburgh Panthers men’s basketball team got a much-needed win over the University of Buffalo Bulls on Wednesday night, especially after Pitt failed to defeat the Duquesne Dukes in the “City Game.” The Panthers beat the Bulls, 84-79. But the game shouldn't have been nearly as close as it was at the end. Pitt once held a 26-point lead, and the team was up 30-6 at one point. At another point, the Panthers were up 47-21 before the Bulls outscored the Panthers 58-37 over the rest of the ... Read More
