It's been a rough month for the Pitt football and basketball programs and the news just keeps getting worse. According to several reports, senior forward J.J. Moore is transferring from the program. CBS Sports Jon Rothstein is one of the sources reporting Moore's intent to transfer, but the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo has reported that while Moore very well may be transferring, he has yet to ask for his official release and hasn’t filled out his transfer papers yet. Pitt defeats DePaul in final Big East regular season game
The last time No. 20 Pitt faced the DePaul Blue Demons, the Panthers won one of the most lopsided games in their history in the Big East Conference, defeating DePaul by 38 points. Saturday afternoon, while the margin wasn't as big, the results were the same as Pitt closed out their chapter of Big East history with an 81-66 victory in their final Big East Conference regular season game ever. Early on it looked like another rout was on hand as the Panthers scored the first nine points out of ... Read More
Perimeter Shooting proving to be Pitt’s biggest weakness
There is a huge weakness on the Pitt basketball team that showed up in a big way during the Panthers' Big East Conference losses to both Cincinnati and Rutgers. A big reason that Pitt has gotten off to an 0-2 start in conference play is the fact that they can't hit a jump shot to save their lives right now. This is a problem that you saw coming during Pitt's soft non-conference schedule. They have some shooters, but they haven't been able to consistently knock shots down as a team. With ... Read More
Pitt Digs Early Hole; Upset by Rutgers
Many wondered how playing a soft non-conference schedule would impact No. 24 Pitt as it headed into Big East Conference play. They got their answer Saturday afternoon against Rutgers. Jamie Dixon's Panthers fell behind by as many as 16 in the first half, digging themselves an early hole too big to climb out of as they were upset by the Scarlet Knights 67-62, losing their second consecutive conference game to open up their final Big East season. For the second consecutive game, the ... Read More
Pitt Completes Comeback for the Ages in Overtime Win vs. Oakland
The Pitt Panthers men’s basketball team has a date at Madison Square Garden with No. 5 Michigan on Wednesday. Apparently they forgot they had to play Oakland on Saturday. Pitt fell into classic trap game syndrome and failed to come out and execute early and found themselves down as many as 18 in the second half, but a furious comeback from the Panthers forced overtime. Once they got there they dominated the Golden Grizzlies and ultimately came out on top with a 72-62 victory to improve to 4-0 ... Read More
Zanna’s Improved Game a Big Reason for Pitt’s 3-0 Start
A big part of the 3-0 start for the Pitt Panthers has been the improved play of power forward Talib Zanna, who has been nothing short of outstanding through three games. Zanna, who has averaged 5.2 points per game throughout his collegiate career thus far, came out and set a career-high in the Panthers opener against Mount St. Mary’s, dropping 20 on the Mountaineers, a total he matched against Lehigh on Tuesday night. The scoring is great for a Pitt team that many felt could struggle scoring ... Read More
Pitt Looks Strong Again; Cruises Past Fordham
The Pitt Panthers men’s basketball team opened up the season in impressive fashion, with a school record performance from the floor. As they opened up the Preseason NIT against Fordham, Jamie Dixon’s Panthers weren’t nearly that efficient shooting the ball, but still shot well enough to cruise to an 86-51 victory and advance to the tournament’s next round. It was the same recipe as the Pitt’s opening win against Mount St. Mary’s. “I was really pleased with our effort and the results,” ... Read More
Panthers Get Defensive in win vs. Hawaii-Hilo
This time it was a little bit more convincing. After struggling early in their first exhibition game against IUP, the Pitt Panthers had no such problems Friday night in the final exhibition game against Hawaii-Hilo. The Panthers scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back, en route to a 77-45 victory at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt scored 48 points in the paint on the night and were led by juniors J.J. Moore and Talib Zanna who each had13 points and ... Read More
